Curious about the two images above? Well, perhaps this is pathetic, but earlier I was reading through some of my old emails to anonymous past boyfriends and I stumbled across one where I focused a great deal on textures. Part of said email read:
Have you ever taken notice of different textures? Today I had a free moment to be by myself and catch my breath. I went on a walk and for the first time my eyes were opened to the manifold of textures that make up our world; Smooth, rough, rigid, grainy, glossy, etc. Being an art student I have been taught about texture countless times, but today I feel on my walk I actually learned and understood it. I suppose this shouldn't be a surprise, after all many times life is the best teacher if we open our minds and allow it to teach us. Immediately I began to sketch the different textures I saw, not taking care to put it in any particular order or design. I just needed to draw it, to digest it. It was funny when I was drawing the texture of the inside of a flower the sprinklers turned on...ha ha after I was out of the water I started drawing the texture of the droplets from the sprinklers :PAfter I rereading this I wanted to go out and find interesting textures. The first image is of a weathered old building that captured my attention. Its exterior told its history, how it had been around long enough to be painted, repainted, and painted again. How it had sheltered its inhabitants from all of the forces of nature. Then when I was walking away from the building a tree with the most interesting trunk called to me.
I haven't decided how I am going to incorporate these textures into my designs yet. But it is fun to look at how other fashion designers have used bold textures in their art. :)
